Dr. Monjurul Hoque and Prof. Brijesh Tiwari from Teagasc participated in an inter-agency visit to the Iceland Ocean Cluster (IOC), Reykjavik on 18th & 19th February, contributing to ongoing research and innovation activities across Teagasc’s marine and blue bioeconomy projects, including the Circular-IMTA-DEMO project.

The visit, coordinated by Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM), brought together key stakeholders from research organisations, regional authorities, and industry to explore innovative approaches for advancing Ireland’s blue bioeconomy ecosystem.

Over the course of the visit, the delegation engaged with leading organisations and companies within the Iceland Ocean Cluster, gaining valuable insights into Iceland’s globally recognised “100% Fish” model, which focuses on maximising resource efficiency and transforming marine by-products into high-value products.

Particular emphasis was placed on the valorisation of marine biomass, including seaweeds, highlighting opportunities for the development of bioactives, biopolymers, functional ingredients, as well as applications in food and feed through sustainable biorefinery approaches. These insights are highly relevant to ongoing work within Teagasc, including the development of integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) systems at the Mount Lucas site under the CIRCULAR-IMTA-DEMO project.

The visit further strengthened international collaboration opportunities and identified key pathways to enhance Ireland’s marine innovation landscape, supporting the transition towards a more sustainable and circular blue bioeconomy.
