CIRCULAR-IMTA-DEMO Engages Future Scientists at Circus Science by the Sea
The CIRCULAR-IMTA-DEMO project was delighted to participate in Circus Science by the Sea, held on 6 June 2026 in Aghleam Townland, County Mayo. The event was organised by Circus250 with support from Research Ireland and brought together researchers, families and local communities to explore science through engaging and interactive activities.
Representing the CIRCULAR-IMTA-DEMO project, Prof. Brijesh K. Tiwari and Monjurul Hoque from Teagasc introduced visitors to the concept of the circular blue bioeconomy and demonstrated how sustainable aquaculture systems can contribute to food security, environmental sustainability, and resource efficiency.
Visitors learned how underutilised marine resources and aquaculture side-streams can be transformed into valuable products through innovative biorefinery approaches. The project highlights opportunities to produce sustainable ingredients and bio-based materials while reducing waste and maximising resource utilisation within aquatic production systems.
A particular highlight of the event was engaging with children and families, who showed great enthusiasm for marine science, sustainability, and environmental stewardship. Interactive discussions and demonstrations provided an excellent platform to raise awareness of how scientific research can contribute to addressing global challenges such as resource scarcity, climate change, and plastic pollution.
The event concluded with a beach clean-up organised by Clean Coasts Ireland, reinforcing the importance of combining scientific innovation with community action to protect marine and coastal environments.
Participation in outreach events such as Circus Science by the Sea plays an important role in communicating research to the wider public, fostering environmental awareness, and inspiring the next generation of scientists, innovators, and sustainability leaders.
