JTP Groundwork Meeting – Sustainable Future for Peatlands (Helsinki)

Published: March 22, 2026

JTP Regional Forum

The JTP Groundwork Technical Regional Forum took place in Helsinki on 18–19 March 2026, bringing together European Commission representatives, national authorities, researchers and regional stakeholders to advance a sustainable future for peatlands. The event focused on how peat‑dependent regions can navigate the just transition, exploring ways to shift from peat extraction toward innovation, green employment and diversified regional economies.

Across two days, participants, which included our very own Dr. Priya Pollard of Indigo Rock Marine Research Centre as a guest speaker, exchanged practical strategies for sustainable peatland management, including skills development, community–industry cooperation and new economic opportunities such as nature‑based solutions, paludiculture, eco‑tourism and bio‑based materials. Workshops and panel discussions highlighted how peatlands can support environmental goals while balancing social and economic needs.

The forum marked a significant step in aligning policy, practice, and regional collaboration to ensure that peatlands contribute to a resilient, low‑carbon and sustainable future for the Baltic Sea Region and beyond.
